John T. Carey, M.D.John T. Carey, M.D.
Dr. Carey was born in 1945 and raised in Pittsburgh. He attended Washington-Jefferson college and graduated with honors. He earned his MD degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, graduating in 1971.

Internship training at Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh was followed by residency at the University of Pittsburgh Health Center hospital from 1972 to 1976. Since 1976, Dr. Carey has been in the practice of Neurology and he is Board Certified in Neurology.

While serving in the Medical Corps of the United States Army, he was staff Neurologist of Silas B. Hayes Army Hospital in Fort Ord, California from 1976 to 1978 and Chief of Neurology from  1977 to 1978. Since then Dr. Carey has been in private practice of neurology in Beaver County, Pennsylvania and is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.

The majority of Dr. Carey's patients have disorders such as headache, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, and other dementias, spinal problems, and peripheral nerve problems. He sees many patients with multiple sclerosis, cerebral concussions, stroke, and other disorders of cerebral circulation.

Dr. Dugan has been in practice with Valley Neurological Associates since 1981. He received an undergraduate degree from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1973 and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1977.

He did an internship in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh and completed a Residency in Neurology at Dartmouth Medical School in New Hampshire in 1981. He became Board Certified in Neurology in 1982.

Dr. Dugan is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology as well as a member of the Pennsylvania and Beaver County Medical Societies. Dr. Dugan was born and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and he and his family have lived in Beaver County for more than 30 years.

Having lived in the area for an extended period of time, Dr. Dugan has appreciated the uniqueness of the people. He has an interest in and treats most neurological diseases especially migraines and headaches.

Rica Nicole Howarth, P.A.Rica Nicole Howarth, P.A.
Rica was born and raised in Soldotna, Alaska. She attended Washington and Jefferson College and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Cell Molecular Biology in 2007.

Rica completed her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies at Saint Vincent University in 2009 and she is a fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants.

She is nationally certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and licensed by the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine.  As a Physician Assistant at Valley Neurological Associates, Rica practices under the guidance of our doctors and Rica looks forward to getting to know you, our community, and addressing your neurological needs with care and compassion.

Mr. Savie is a 1983 graduate from the University of Miami, Florida, with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Physical Therapy. He returned to Beaver County to begin his professional career at the Medical Center of Beaver County. Along with performing physical therapy within the hospital, he had his first exposure to the clinical applications of EMG and NCV studies under the direction of the neurologists from Valley Neurological Associates. In 1985, he moved on to receive more extensive training in the electrical studies with Martin, McGough and Eddy Physical Therapy Services of Somerset, PA. In 1991, he became a Clinical Specialist in Clinical Electrophysiological Physical Therapy certified through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. He retains this certification today and was recertified for a third time in 2012. He is one of approximately 148 physical therapists sharing this distinction from across the country. In 1993, he joined MRS Physical Therapy of Bridgewater, PA and continues to perform EMG/NCV studies on a daily basis at Valley Neurological Associates.

Throughout Mr. Savie's professional career, he has also established a strong academic background. In 1989, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Master's Degree in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. Since it's conception in 1991, he has been an adjunct instructor in anatomy for the John G. Rangos Sr. School of Health Sciences at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh teaching primarily in the human anatomy labs. Prior to that, for 4 years, he was also a teaching assistant for the Anatomy and Cell Biology Department at the University of Pittsburgh. He also served as a lab assistant for the Medical Technology Program while in college at the University of Miami, Florida.

Mr. Savie, a Beaver County native, currently resides in Economy Borough with his 2 children Justin and Morgan. He holds a second degree Black Belt through the World Tang Soo Do Association, is an instructor of Ki-Gong through the World Ki-Gong Club, and enjoys making homemade wine and Ratafia as a hobby.
